Play with sound.
Around 4–6 seconds, a passerby crosses the speaker’s path and the sound briefly drops.

ABOUT

VOID-a explores a reversal between seeing and being seen.

The viewer looks at the work, while the work appears to return that gaze. An eye-like form gives the screen object a minimal sense of presence.

This relation unfolds through perspective and sound.

VISUAL GAZE

Moving viewpoint

Anamorphosis usually depends on a fixed viewing position.

VOID-a instead explores a moving virtual viewpoint, using two displays to construct a shared virtual space whose perspective can shift rather than remain fixed.

AUDITORY GAZE

Directional sound

The same relation extends into sound.

A custom parametric speaker concentrates sound into a narrow direction rather than dispersing it broadly through the room.

Kinect tracks the viewer’s position, TouchDesigner calculates the target direction, and a servo physically aims the speaker toward the viewer.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

Realtime image generation was explored as part of the visual system, applying generated textures directly to moving 3D geometry in TouchDesigner.

INSTALLATION

Perspective and sound converge on the viewer.

Real-time visuals, tracking, and directional audio create an encounter in which the work appears to look — and listen — back.
